Project overview

In the CITES project we delivered four e-learning modules that stepped the learners through the CITES processes and the Trade in Endangered Species (TIES) Act. The first module outlined the legislation, the second explained the species covered by the legislation, the third the types of permits that could be required and the fourth what could be detained under what grounds.

One of the key skills that a CITES Officer needs is to review and evaluate a CITES permit. To increase confidence in this activity we created a pick-a-path activity for the officers to practise the skills. In the exercise, they reviewed real permits and identified whether they were valid or not as they processed a traveller.

As part of this project, we needed to engage learners from two different organisations that both have different priorities to DOC. We did this by putting a lot of focus on the illustrative elements, and created gifs and interactive learner activities. Both groups of learners are passionate about protecting the borders of New Zealand, so we ensured that scenarios and items they were interested in were included in the content.

“We were very impressed with the dedication and effort they put into the modules, and have had a lot of feedback about how visually stunning they are, and how fun the modules are to complete. It's a pleasure to work with them and we hope to work with them again soon.”
